Emotional Regulation, Consistency and Awareness
In the study of graphology, emotional regulation and consistency of the writer has got much importance.
The baseline is either an actual or anticipated line on which the small letters are positioned. The baseline can be of four types – straight, wavy, erratic or inclined. An individual having a straight base line may have anxious or over restricted temperament. Critically wavy baseline may be an indicative of intense level of emotional ups and downs. While an ascending baseline implies a sense of optimism, the downward slopping baseline implies a strong sense of pessimism, depression or exhaustion. On the other hand, a level baseline points out a homeostasis between optimism and pessimism.
Concentration
With the help of graphology, the writer's ability to concentrate can be analyzed. This quality can be determined by the writing size. Small writing implies that the individual has the ability to concentrate more than average. Additionally, he has the ability to focus on the minor details of a given task. Moreover, they are less vulnerable to external distraction. The majority of individuals having this type of writing typically belong to the group of professors, researchers, scholars, scientists, bookkeepers, and likewise. People having small writing prefer to accomplish their task individually rather than in group setting. They are dependable in order to get assigned monotonous tasks and follow them rigorously till the completion of the tasks. Small hand writing is an indicative of conservative mind and thriftiness.
Majority of individuals write following average size, which implies that they have an average degree of capacity to focus their mind into minute details. For these types of individuals have the average ability to focus on subtle details, and become withdrawn if the task persists for prolonged period of time. People having large writing are highly vulnerable to external distraction. They experience a strong difficulty in concentration. For these people, it is better to assign a varied degree of assignments with short term duration, so that they can easily finish the assigned tasks.
Directions and Zones
The directions and zones are one of the most comprehensive analyses of the study of graphology. Hand writing is in motion in two dimensional planes – both horizontal and vertical. Leftwards or toward the rear, upright or vertical, and rightwards or to the fore are the three directions of horizontal planes. On the other hand, upper, middle and lower are the three directions of vertical planes. The letters b, d, h, k, l, and t are the letters which have upper lengths, extending to the upper zones as well. The letters a, c, e, m, o, r, s, u, v, w, x are the letters whose positions are limited to the middle portion only. The letters g, j, p, q, y and z are the letters which extend to the lower zone. The letter f covers the entire three zones. According to the believers of Freudian school, hand writing is a special interpreting tool to determine the relationship between the ego of an individual and components of environment. Hence, the individuals having rightward impulse express their desire to put forth the external world. The higher the degree of forward inclination, the more extroverts the individual is. When the writing is estimated to the vertical inclination, the less is the propensity of the individual to put forth to the external world. When the hand writing is leaning backward, the individual tends to be introvert.
On the other hand, the forward slopping writing exhibits extroversion. These individuals tend to create impression on others. The backward slopping writing is an indicative of introversion. People having this type of writing are much more concerned with the understanding of the internal world. They have a strong sense of imagination, feelings and visions. Perpendicular style of writing is an indicative of the balance between extroversion and introversion. When the writing style vacillates between forward and backward slopping, it is an indicative of ambivalence towards life events and to the external world. Virtually, there is no writing style that follows exclusively one particular pattern of slopping to a specific direction. The predominant slope is what matters the most.
The movement of writing instrument towards upper zone implies the influence of extensor muscles. Since this is an indicative of movement from writer's body itself, it signifies the psychological periphery of insight and contemplation. In addition, it essentially covers those aspects which are not influenced under materialistic considerations. Hence it also includes abstraction and speculation of mind as well. On the other hand, when the movement of writing instrument runs towards lower zone, this is assumed to be influenced by flexor muscles. This is symbolized with the understanding of the specific type of movement running towards the writer's body. This is an indicative of psychological periphery of primal nature and materialism and irrationalism. It is to be remembered that the flexor movements are integrally associated with the trivial feeling of happiness, while the extensor movements are fundamentally associated with trivial feeling of unhappiness.
Middle zone resides between upper zone and lower zone. It is an indicative of a balance between the essential communal and instinctual domains of personality. It is indeed a dynamic equilibrium which is critical to execute and implement practical modification demanded in every life-event and also crucial for survival. The same explanation is also applicable in the area of extreme leftward slopping. People having this type of writing have the ability to express their internal feelings in a more extensive fashion by means of upper and lower zones. On the other hand, extremely interconnected writing may be an indicative of nervous temperament, characterized of having low resistance to external tensions, having an indecisive attitude towards life events.
